Good evening, fellow Toastmasters. My name is Song hyun and I was born in busan in 1999. My major was oil painting but these days, I'm studying programming to get a job.
Today, I will give my icebreaker speech, a chance to introduce myself. I want to share a little about who I am and why I joined this club.
We meet many people or starting something new evrey day. And first impression is one of the most important thing of that. If we want to know someone or something. than we need to spend time with them a lot. then we could find varius side of them and we could love them. Like 'a oicture is better than 100 word'.
When I was young, my mother always told me, “Songhyun, you need to study English harder! It’s the most powerful language in the world.” She sent me to a private academy for almost ten years. But, as you know, when parents say, “You need to do this,” we often want to do the opposite—without no reason. Of course, I studied English for my mother, not for myself, and as a result, my scores were not very good.
Because of this memory, I wanted to threw my english text book after 수능. And I did and entered university. After entering university, no one forced me to study anymore. Until then, I had never seriously thought about learning English or any other foreign language. But then, something happened that changed my mind.
One day, a classmate of mine brought a friend to our classroom. His friend was a foreigner, But I thought they would speak Korean. Because most of classmates hate english too. However, my classmate started speaking fluent English. His words flowed naturally, and I was shocked. I asked myself, Can I speak English like that? The answer was a clear no. That moment hit me hard. I had studied English for over ten years, yet I couldn’t express myself at all.
Then came the COVID-19 pandemic. My major was oil painting, but we had to stop attending classes because we couldn't gather to paint. I wondered how I could use my time productively—and then, I remembered my classmate. That’s when I decided to start studying English again.
At first, I picked up a grammar book, English Grammar in Use. But it was so boring. I didn’t enjoy it at all. So I changed my approach and joined an English-speaking class. Using Skype and speaking with teacher every day.
As expected, it was really difficult. I had never used English before, so whenever I wanted to say something, I had to search for words on Google. Sometimes, it took me a whole minute just to find a word. My teacher patiently waited for me, but I felt sorry for her. Sometimes, her waiting time was longer than the time I actually spent speaking.
Because of this frustrating experience, I started practicing English on my own. At that time, I was working at a bakery in the evenings. After the peak hours, if there were no customers, I would imagine my teacher in front of me and practice speaking. I also started writing speech scripts about topics I liked. This made me more engaged in learning English, and over time, I got used to speaking and expressing myself.
After a few months, I could finally say what I wanted to say simple way. That’s when I realized how interesting English actually was. It made me understand something important: We never truly know what something is like until we experience it ourself. Now, I've been taking class almost for 3 years.
Painting and English. It seems so different but English taught me how to know something deeply and do my best. After COVID-19, this experience also helped me grow up in my major too. The can-do attitude.
I know that All of us in here have good memories or motivation with english. Also that why I'm in front of you this night. I want to meet people who wants to know and like about english and communication. It's my first speech and fourth time with you, But as much as I can I want to meet you again.
Many people say, "백문이 일여일견." or "시작이 반이다." So I want to start with you.
